Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has partnered with Mubadala and the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) to expand the Abu Dhabi Canvas initiative, aimed at transforming the cityscape with vibrant murals by Emirati and locally-based artists.

In a recent announcement, the Abu Dhabi media office tweeted that the new project “supports efforts to foster inclusive and enriching public spaces and displays artworks from five Emirati artists in Rabdan area and showcases artwork from four students that participated in National Art Expressions exhibition at Delivery Riders Hubs".

The project will bring an infusion of art into Abu Dhabi’s urban environment, highlighting the talents of Emirati artists and promoting the city’s cultural heritage. “In Rabdan, an array of artworks by five Emirati artists will be showcased across 17 murals, 26 crosswalks and 15 utility boxes. These will offer residents a dynamic visual experience that blends storytelling with everyday urban elements while celebrating local artistry", the media office added.

Salem Al Kaabi, Director General of Operational Affairs at DMT, emphasized the importance of these collaborations in enhancing public spaces. He said, “Through our partnership with the Mubadala Foundation and ADEK, we will further enhance our city’s public spaces by infusing art into everyday infrastructures. These projects aim to create additional vibrant, engaging spaces that resonate with our community and reflect our shared values through the Abu Dhabi Canvas initiative while celebrating the UAE’s rich cultural and artistic heritage".

In addition to beautifying the Rabdan area, the initiative also includes the development of Delivery Riders Hubs. These hubs are strategically located across the city and serve as essential service points for delivery drivers, offering amenities such as shaded seating, air-conditioning, drinking water facilities, and phone charging stations. The hubs are practical infrastructures and part of the community’s artistic landscape, promoting urban enrichment through art.

By integrating art into everyday spaces, Abu Dhabi’s Canvas initiative continues to celebrate local artistry while enhancing the livability and aesthetic appeal of the city. This expansion marks another step in fostering an inclusive, culturally rich urban environment.
