Riyadh: Saudi Arabia is going to host an international competition on Quran recitals and Azan ( the call for prayer), Agence France-Presse reported.

The competition, which will feature contestants from Muslim communities all over the World, was launched by the Saudi General Entertainment Authority. The competition is a tradition that started in the middle of the seventh century AD.

The contest was announced in 2019, and more than 40,00o contestants from 80 countries took part in the initial rounds. The competition has been narrowed contestants to 36, through various stages, who had reached the final.

There are 18 finalists each for both the competitions, Quran recital and call to prayer. The finals will be aired on the Scent of Speech programme on the official television channel of Saudi during Ramadan.

Candidates will be selected by a jury of 13 international judges, who were selected for their expertise in various specializations, including phonetics, language and grammar — ensuring that only the very best win their share of the $3.2 million cash pot.

The jury includes 13 international judges, who will evaluate the contestants in various areas like phonetics, language and grammar. The winner of the Quran recitation will receive $1.3 million, while the call of prayer will receive $533,000. Out of the total $3.2 million, the rest will go to runners up.
