QatarEnergy reports offshore hydrocarbon discovery in Republic of Congo
text_fieldsQatarEnergy has reported a new hydrocarbon discovery offshore the Republic of Congo, expanding its overseas upstream portfolio as it works to restore liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity following recent disruptions.
The discovery was made at the MHNM-6 NFW exploration well in the Moho offshore licence. According to the company, the well encountered a 160-metre hydrocarbon column within Albian reservoirs described as having good quality.
The discovery is part of a deep offshore oil project operated by TotalEnergies E&P Congo (TEPC), which drilled the well. QatarEnergy holds a 15 per cent stake in TEPC. TotalEnergies operates the licence with a 63.5 per cent interest, alongside Trident Energy with 21.5 per cent and Societe Nationale des Petroles du Congo with 15 per cent.
The development adds to QatarEnergy’s expanding presence in Africa, where it has built a portfolio spanning Egypt, Namibia, South Africa, Mauritania and Libya. The company has been among the most active explorers globally in recent years, as it targets production of 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from international assets by 2030.
Africa has played a growing role in global energy exploration, accounting for about 40 per cent of gas discoveries since the mid-2010s. Much of this activity has been focused on emerging regions including Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania and Namibia.
