Kuwait welcomes UNHRCs adoption of resolution on humanitarian aid access

Kuwait has welcomed the adoption of a United Nations Human Rights Council resolution focused on protecting humanitarian aid access and safeguarding relief workers in conflict zones.

The resolution was adopted during the council’s 62nd session and was introduced by Kuwait in partnership with Egypt, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Titled “The impact of preventing and obstructing humanitarian assistance and attacks on the safety of humanitarian personnel on the enjoyment of human rights in armed conflicts”, the resolution addresses the effect of blocking aid and targeting humanitarian workers during armed conflicts.

Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the adoption highlights the importance of protecting humanitarian personnel and ensuring safe, unhindered delivery of aid to affected populations.

The ministry said these principles are essential to protecting civilians and preserving basic rights under international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

It added that the resolution forms part of Kuwait’s work during its 2024-2026 membership of the Human Rights Council to strengthen international human rights protections.

Kuwait expressed appreciation to Egypt, Indonesia and Malaysia for their contributions as members of the core group, as well as to the countries that co-sponsored the resolution.

The ministry said the resolution’s adoption by consensus shows growing international recognition of the need to protect humanitarian work and ensure the safety of aid personnel.
