Jews Group in US says ‘not in our name’, activists demanding ceasefire arrested

Washington: As protests rage across the globe against Israeli aggression in Gaza, approximately 500 people under the banner of Jewish Voice for Peace, held a sit-in at the United States Congress in Washington, DC, against 'Israel’s ongoing oppression of Palestinians,' braced for arrests.
The demonstrators, donned in shirts declaring "Not in our name," strategically occupied the lobby of the congressional building, surrounded by law enforcement as they unfurled a conspicuous banner demanding a "ceasefire."
A massive march unfolded on the streets of the US capital, where an estimated 10,000 people joined the cause, amplifying the call to end the violence in the besieged Gaza Strip. Jewish Voice for Peace asserted that the objective was to draw attention to the alleged complicity of the United States in supporting Israel's actions.
The protest occurred against the backdrop of Israel's intensifying bombardment of Gaza, prompting outrage both domestically and internationally. The Gaza Strip, home to 2.3 million residents, faced a "total siege," resulting in restricted access to essential resources such as food, water, electricity, and medical supplies.
Israel's military campaign, initiated after an attack by Hamas on southern Israel, has claimed a significant toll. Israeli authorities reported at least 1,400 casualties, predominantly civilians, and 199 individuals taken captive.
In contrast, Palestinian authorities asserted that over 3,400 people, including a third being children, have lost their lives due to the relentless bombardment.
Jewish Voice for Peace emphasized the urgency for collective action, stressing the need for Jews and all Americans to rise against what they perceive as injustices. The United States, traditionally a staunch ally of Israel, reiterated its support during President Joe Biden's meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
However, the US drew criticism as it stood alone in vetoing a United Nations Security Council resolution advocating a humanitarian pause to facilitate aid entry into Gaza.
