Efforts are underway within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to advocate for the exemption of its citizens from the Schengen visa. This aims at facilitating travel between GCC member states and Europe.

Jasem Albudaiwi, the Secretary General of the GCC, revealed plans to travel to Brussels to address the issue of Schengen visa exemption. He emphasized the importance of GCC countries having a "strong file" on the matter.

“Our presence, as Gulf citizens, in Europe is positive in terms of education, tourism, medical treatment, purchases or trade exchange,” Albudaiwi told Saudiah TV Channel.

He argued that GCC countries, known for stability and positive exports, deserve exemption from the Schengen visa.

The Secretary General highlighted the constructive influence of GCC investment in Europe and expressed confidence in the potential waiver, citing the beneficial relationship between the two regions.

Albudaiwi emphasized the positive impact of GCC investment in Europe and the potential benefits of exempting Gulf citizens from the Schengen visa, paving the way for increased collaboration and economic growth.

Despite current visa requirements, Albudaiwi expressed optimism about the eventual exemption, citing ongoing efforts and the positive outcomes expected from closer cooperation between the GCC and Europe.

At a recent GCC summit in Doha, leaders approved a unified Gulf visa system, allowing seamless travel across the six GCC countries. This decision marks a significant step towards enhancing regional integration and facilitating tourism and trade.

The unified Gulf visa system aims to streamline travel procedures and promote economic activities within the GCC. Technical committees are working to finalize the system for implementation, with expectations for its issuance later this year.

Albudaiwi anticipates the issuance of the first unified Gulf visa this year, reflecting the commitment of GCC member states to promoting regional cooperation and facilitating travel for citizens and visitors alike.

Following approval by GCC interior ministers, the unified tourist visa is poised to enhance tourism and economic prospects across the GCC. Plans are underway to implement the visa system efficiently, ensuring its accessibility and effectiveness.

The GCC's advocacy for Schengen visa exemption and the approval of a unified Gulf visa system reflect the region's vision to foster closer ties and promoting economic development. With concerted efforts and strategic initiatives, the GCC aims to strengthen its position on the global stage and enhance opportunities for its citizens and residents.
