Improper use of massage guns may lead to nerve damage, experts warn

Massage guns, widely used for muscle recovery and pain relief, can cause serious health problems if used improperly, medical experts have warned.

Originally popular among gym-goers for relieving post-workout muscle soreness, massage guns use percussive therapy to improve blood circulation, reduce muscle tension, and speed up recovery by lowering lactic acid buildup.

While generally safe when used correctly, experts say misuse or certain medical conditions can lead to side effects ranging from mild discomfort to serious injuries.

Using massage guns near sensitive areas, such as the eyes, may cause damage. Rapid vibrations generated by the device can travel through surrounding tissue and potentially harm the lens of the eye, which could contribute to cataract formation if repeated pressure is applied near the eye area.

Experts also caution that applying a massage gun directly on bones may lead to fractures, particularly in people with low bone density or osteoporosis. Excessive force around joints or sensitive organs can trigger pain or inflammation.

Improper use may also result in bruising, nerve irritation, and tissue damage. Using the device aggressively or without proper technique can worsen already injured muscles rather than relieve pain.

Doctors also warn that the strong impacts produced by massage guns may rupture small blood vessels under the skin, potentially causing bruising or inflammation. In sensitive areas, this could aggravate existing health problems such as migraines or vascular conditions.

Other reported side effects include soreness, headaches, and dizziness, especially if the device is used on the neck or head or for extended periods.

Experts advise using massage guns only on larger muscle groups such as the thighs, calves, or back, and starting at low intensity for short durations. They also recommend avoiding direct pressure on bones and joints and consulting a doctor before use, particularly for people with fragile skin, bleeding disorders, nerve damage, vascular conditions, or recent injuries.
