Washington: A study conducted in the US inferred that fears that Delta variant of the Covid-19 causes more severe diseases in children are unfounded, Agence France-Presse reported.

The study conducted by the US's Centres for Disease Control and Prevention also found that unvaccinated adolescents hospitalised due to the disease are more than ten times that of vaccinated, from June 20 to July 31, 2021.

The agency analysed a collection of hospital records in an area that covers around 10 per cent of the US population between March 1 to August 14 2021, which includes periods before and after Delta's advent.

After examining the records, the agency found that the percentage of children with severe illness before and after Delta does not make a significant difference. The per cent of hospitalised patients admitted to intensive care was 26.5 pre-Delta and 23.2 post. The percentage admitted in ventilators was 6.1 before Delta and 9.8 after, while the percentage of death was 0.7 before and 1.8 after.

But more data is needed for the scientists to get greater confidence in this conclusion.

The study also emphasised the effectiveness of the vaccine in paediatric hospitalisations due to the Delta. Unvaccinated children are 10.1 times more likely to be hospitalised compared to vaccinated.

Another study by the CDC inferred that a high rate of community vaccination suppressed pandemic transmission and protected children
