Los Angeles: Global toy sensation Labubu is set to make its big-screen debut, with Sony Pictures partnering with POP MART on an upcoming live-action CGI film adaptation.

The project has roped in BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Paul King, known for directing Paddington and Wonka, to serve as director and producer, Variety reported. King will also co-write the screenplay with playwright and screenwriter Steven Levenson, a Tony, Writers Guild, and Emmy nominee.

Currently in early development, the film will be a hybrid of live-action and CGI, bringing to life the quirky universe of Labubu, a mischievous, goblin-like character with wide eyes, pointy ears, and a toothy grin that has captivated collectors worldwide.

The announcement was made by Labubu creator Kasing Lung alongside King during the Paris stop of POP MART’s global exhibition tour, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of The Monsters.

Labubu originated from Lung’s picture book series, often referred to as The Monsters Trilogy, before evolving into a global pop culture sensation through collectible figurines and blind box releases. The toys, produced and sold exclusively by POP MART, have gained immense popularity for their blend of cuteness and eerie charm, spawning multiple themed editions and a devoted international fan base.

Sony Pictures acquired the screen rights to the Labubu intellectual property in 2025, paving the way for this cinematic adaptation. Lung will serve as an executive producer, while producers include King, Michael Schaefer, and Wenxin She. Brittany Morrissey will oversee the project for Sony Pictures.
