Pathanamthitta: A shocking case of police brutality has emerged in Pathanamthitta, where a family returning from a wedding was allegedly assaulted by officers led by Sub-Inspector S. Jinu. The late-night attack took place when their vehicle made a brief stop while en route to Kottayam.

Eyewitnesses report that the attack was unprovoked. "We had just stopped to drop off a passenger when suddenly, baton-wielding police officers charged at us and started beating everyone indiscriminately," said a woman from the wedding party.

Among the injured is 31-year-old Sithara, who suffered a dislocated shoulder after falling while trying to escape the assault. "My husband merely questioned why they were attacking us, and he, too, was brutally beaten, sustaining a head injury," she stated from her hospital bed at a local government hospital.

Following a formal complaint from Sithara, an FIR has been registered against SI Jinu and four other officers. The incident has sparked public outrage, with political leaders strongly condemning the police action.

Pathanamthitta MP Anto Antony called the incident "absolute mayhem unleashed by the police" and highlighted that this was not an isolated case. "I have spoken to the Superintendent of Police and demanded strict action against the officers responsible," he said.

Former five-time CPI(M) legislator and current CPI(M) district secretary Raju Abraham also expressed concern. "This brutal attack on innocent people, including women, is deeply disturbing. The Kerala Police is known for its discipline, and such incidents tarnish its reputation. A thorough investigation and strict action are necessary," he stated.

A preliminary inquiry by the police special branch revealed that the officers responded to a complaint from a bar hotel in Pathanamthitta, which had reported a disturbance outside its premises. However, the responding officers allegedly used excessive force, indiscriminately attacking bystanders.

The incident has ignited protests, with Youth Congress workers announcing demonstrations in Pathanamthitta, demanding justice for the victims. Authorities have assured that a detailed investigation will be conducted by the district SP, and strict action will follow against those responsible.
