Pathanamthitta rape case: SIT confirms 44 arrests in abuse scandal
text_fieldsPathanamthitta: A shocking case of repeated sexual assault of a teenage girl in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district has led to the arrest of 44 people, with more arrests expected. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is probing the case, and its chief, Ajitha Begum, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday.
"There are two accused who are now abroad and another 13 more who have to be arrested. The investigation is going in a fast-paced manner and all will be arrested at the earliest,” the SIT chief said.
The victim, who was reportedly assaulted by 59 people, had her statement recorded before a magistrate on Tuesday. The SIT has also initiated proceedings for a red corner notice to bring back two accused who are currently abroad.
The case has seen 31 cases registered across five police stations, with the accused including three minors and four students preparing for their Class 12 final examinations. Most of the arrested individuals are between 17 and 28 years old.
According to the victim's statement, she was exploited at various locations, including secluded rubber plantations, vehicles, and other spots within the district. The assaults began when the victim was 13 years old and were perpetrated by acquaintances, coaches, senior sportsmen, and others who exploited her role as a sportswoman.
The SIT traced the long list of accused by analyzing the victim's diary and her father's mobile phone. The investigation is ongoing, with the SIT working to arrest the remaining 13 accused.
The case has drawn widespread attention, reminiscent of other high-profile sexual assault cases in Kerala, including the Suryanelli, Vithura, and Kozhikode incidents. The case is a disturbing reminder of the need for increased protection and support for victims of sexual assault.
