Man sentenced to life for killing wife in Kannur; death penalty plea rejected
text_fieldsKannur: A court in Kerala’s Kannur has sentenced a 43-year-old man to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, a police officer, at Karivellur.
Thalassery District Sessions Court Judge K T Nisar Ahamed on Friday awarded life imprisonment to Rajesh K of Kozhummal for killing his wife, Divyasree (38), a native of Karivellur.
The court handed separate life sentences to Rajesh under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 103(1) (murder), 109(1) (attempt to murder), and 332(2) (house trespass). Additionally, he was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment under Section 238(2) of the BNS. The court ordered all sentences to run concurrently and imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh.
According to the prosecution, Rajesh held a grudge against his wife for filing a divorce petition and maintaining her stand during counselling sessions.
On November 24, 2024, he allegedly went to Divyasree’s house carrying a billhook and petrol and attacked her. Her father, who tried to intervene, was also assaulted. Divyasree succumbed to her injuries, while her father sustained serious injuries in the attack.
Although the prosecution sought the death penalty, the court ruled that the case did not fall under the “rarest of rare” category, citing the overall circumstances.
During the trial, 65 prosecution witnesses were examined, and the court considered 179 documents and 51 material objects as evidence.
