Kudumbashree to launch crime mapping to fight violence against women

Thiruvananthapuram: Kudumbashree organisation in 152 panchayats in Kerala is set to launch a crime mapping mission to fight crimes against women and children.

The new mission aims to map 152 blocks, one panchayat in each block, in the first year. More panchayats will be covered in the coming years.

The tools designed for the mission will help women identify crime hot spots, types of crime, occurrence, and other patterns, said Sindhu V, State Programme Manager, Gender, Kudumbashree.

The team will use the data to understand causes of crime and devise strategies to prevent them, she added.

The mapping will be held at the Kudumbashree area development society (ADS) level and perfected at the community development society (CDS) level. The action plan for the same will be implemented with the support of government departments and the police.

P.I. Sreevidya, Executive Director, Kudumbashree said that they plan to use a focused approach to prevent crimes against women.The team is also planning on educating children and youngsters on gender issues.

The state budget has allocated Rs. 20 crore for crime mapping in all local bodies.

The first crime mapping by the Kudumbashree was set up a few years ago. It led to the formation of Snehitha gender help desks which provide the service of community counsellors.The goal of crime mapping is to reduce crime against women by 25% in the next five years.
