KFPA kicks out Sandra Thomas amid Malayalam film controversy
text_fieldsKochi: The Malayalam film industry is once again engulfed in controversy following the expulsion of actress-producer Sandra Thomas from the Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA). This decision comes in the wake of ongoing turmoil since the release of the Hema Committee report in August, which has intensified scrutiny of the industry’s practices.
An influential figure in the Malayalam film industry, Sandra had conflicted with the Association since the release of the Hema Committee report. She filed a complaint against the Association, alleging that it functioned as a subsidiary of the powerful Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA).
The Association dismissed her complaint as a fake one and they decided to take action against her. With relations already strained between her and KFPA, Sandra along with another female producer, submitted a written demand for a change in the office bearers and this was treated as an act of indiscipline by the male-dominated group. She was also frustrated with the Association for its silence following the publication of the Hema Committee report, especially as police investigations began based on numerous complaints from various actresses.
She was further disappointed when the Association called a meeting to address her concerns, which she felt was merely a facade, leaving her feeling humiliated. Her outspoken stance on the existence of a controlling power group within the Malayalam film industry further positioned her as a controversial figure. Known for her roles in hits like "Amen" and "Zachariayude Garbhinikal", Sandra has also produced notable films, including "Philips and the Monkey Pen."
Previously, she gained attention when her business partner, Vijay Babu, who co-founded the film production company Friday Film House with her, parted ways. Following this split, she launched her own production company, Sandra Thomas Productions.
Her departure is likely to have a significant impact on the industry, highlighting the ongoing issues of representation and accountability in Malayalam cinema.
