Thiruvananthapuram: A day after the state reported the highestever single day spike in COVID-19 cases, Kerala on Monday reported just 1,648 cases and 12 more fatalities, taking the infection count to 89,488 and death toll to 359.

According to a health department bulletin, 2,246 patients were discharged today, taking the total cured in the state to 67,001.

State healthminister K K Shailja said out of the new cases, 29 came from abroad, 54 from otherstates, while 1,495 contracted the disease through their contacts.

Out of the infected today, sources of 112 are yet to be identified and 61 health workers are also among those who have contracted the infection.

The state had yesterday recorded 3,082 fresh COVID-19 cases, its biggest ever daily spike.

"Currently 22,066 persons are under treatment in the state for COVID-19.

At least 2,00,651 persons are under observation in the state while 18,130 are in isolation wards across the state," the release said.

The state had tested 20,215 samples in the last 24 hours.

Among the districts, Kannur today reported 260 positive cases, the highest in the state, followed by Thiruvananthapuram with 253 cases and Malappuram 187.

Kottayam has 154 cases, Kasaragod reported 134 cases, Ernakulam 130, Thrissur 128, Palakkad 118, Kozhikode 103, Alappuzha 78, Kollam 71, Pathanamthitta 24, while Idukki and Wayanad have four cases each.

Eight regions have been removed from the category of hotspots and currently there are 575 hotspots in the state.
