IMD issues yellow alert for Kerala as heavy rain predicted
text_fieldsThiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Kerala, forecasting heavy rainfall over the next two days due to a low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal.
The IMD has warned of strong winds and intense showers on Tuesday and Wednesday, urging residents to remain alert. Rainfall between 7 mm and 11 mm in 24 hours is likely at isolated places in the state from August 26 to 28, with northern and central districts expected to be most affected.
On Tuesday, the yellow alert will cover Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. By Wednesday, Ernakulam will be added to the list, along with Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts, as winds are expected to reach 40-60 kmph, creating hazardous marine conditions. Coastal residents have also been asked to exercise caution.
Earlier this month, heavy rains and strong winds caused widespread damage in Kerala, including uprooted trees, damaged houses, and power outages. With the state still recovering, officials fear fresh disruptions if rainfall intensifies.
Disaster management authorities have directed local administrations to stay prepared, including setting up relief camps in vulnerable areas. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, steer clear of waterlogged roads, and follow safety measures issued by the government.
While the southwest monsoon remains active, officials noted that the evolving low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal will be crucial in determining the rainfall intensity in the coming days. With alerts already in place, authorities have stressed the need for heightened vigilance in the districts under warning.
