Fraternity Movement welcomes move to enact Rohith Vemula Act; Islamophobia also should be included
text_fieldsThiruvananthapuram: The Fraternity Movement has welcomed the promise in the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) manifesto to implement the Rohith Vemula Act to address caste discrimination on campuses, while also urging that Islamophobia be included within the scope of the proposed legislation.
Kerala State president of Fraternity Movement, Naeem Gafoor said that the organisation has been consistently raising the demand for implementing the Rohith Vemula Act to combat caste- and race-based discrimination in campuses, especially in the context of amendments to UGC regulations.
He noted that the movement had held discussions with leaders from marginalised communities as well as political figures, including the Leader of the Opposition, to push this demand.
He added that the UDF’s announcement should be seen as recognition of the efforts by organisations like the Fraternity Movement in highlighting the social reality of caste and racial discrimination in Kerala’s campuses.
At the same time, Gafoor emphasised that the proposed law should adopt a more comprehensive framework by addressing not only caste discrimination but also forms of bias such as Islamophobia.
State president Naeem Gafoor added that the organisation envisions the Rohith Vemula Act as a strong social safeguard against caste- and race-based discrimination.
