Dr Vandana Das murder: CM Vijayan to meet protesting doctors today
text_fieldsThiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today will meet the doctors protesting the murder of Dr Vandana Das, who succumbed to injuries after being stabbed multiple times by a patient.
The discussion commenced at 10.30 am on Thursday. The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) and ESI doctors’ association KGIMO, have announced that their strike will continue.
However, the services in the ICU, casualty and labour rooms will not be affected.
IMA while demanding that compensation of Rs 1 crore be given to Vandana’s family, accused the Kerala police of failing to do their duty to protect the young doctor. The association has also called for an ordinance to be passed.
The protestors including doctors and medical students, held a sit-in at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College hospital till Vandana’s autopsy was completed.
Thousands including medical students, house surgeons, junior doctors, PG doctors and doctors of several medical organisations conducted a protest march from Martyrs’ Column in Palayam to the Secretariat, blocking the road.
Dr Vandana, a student of Azeezia Medical College, who was appointed at Kottarakara taluk hospital for house surgency training, was stabbed to death by Sandeep, a school teacher from Pooyappally in Kollam, reportedly, a drug addict, who was brought in for treatment.
He was reportedly, undergoing de-addiction therapy for drug use. Sandeep attacked Vandana with a pair of surgical scissors leading to severe neck injuries after which she was rushed to KIMS hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. Vandana later succumbed to injuries. Sandeep has now been suspended.
The attack also left a home guard, Alex Kutty and Kottarakara sub-inspector of police Manilal injured after they try to intervene.
