Delhi HC summons Shashi Tharoor in defamation case filed by BJP leader
text_fieldsNew Delhi: In a defamation case brought by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a Bharatiya Janata Party leader, the Delhi High Court summoned Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday, according to the Bar and Bench.
Tharoor received notice from the court seeking his response by April 28. According to the lawsuit, Tharoor seriously harmed Chandrasekhar's reputation both personally and professionally by making false and defamatory statements about him during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram constituency, Tharoor ran against Chandrasekhar and defeated him in the parliament election.
Chandrasekhar handed Tharoor a defamation notice following the elections. Then, Chandrasekhar went to the High Court to ask for an injunction against Tharoor, a public apology, and Rs 10 crores in compensation for the harm to his reputation, Scroll.in reported.
Additionally, the Congress leader was charged with conducting a false campaign against Chandrasekhar. JR Padmakumar, a representative of the Bharatiya Janata Party, filed a complaint alleging that Tharoor had made defamatory remarks about Chandrasekhar on a television program. The case was filed on April 15.
According to Padmakumar, during the general elections, Tharoor accused Chandrasekhar of influencing voters in coastal areas using unlawful means. In a legal document to Tharoor, Chandrasekhar charged that the Congress MP had made defamatory remarks about him.
“With his baseless allegation, he has also damaged the reputation of religious and community organisations in the [state] capital,” the BJP leader had said.
