Thiruvananthapuram: State-wide protests and public meetings will be organized by the Congress Block Committees on Thursday evening, January 11, to protest against the 'unwarranted' arrest of Youth Congress State President Rahul Mamkootathil, said KPCC President K. Sudhakaran.

Rahul was arrested in an early morning operation by the Cantonment police following which the Youth Congress activists took to the streets in protest. The activists blocked roads at Chavara in Kollam, Kannur and Malappuram and laid siege to a police station in Palakkad.

Protests were also held in all the district headquarters which were led by senior Congress leaders and representatives.

In the state capital, the Youth Congress workers blocked the police vehicle as Rahul was being taken to Fort Taluk Hospital for a medical examination. The protestors led by Youth Congress district president Nemom Shajeer blocked the vehicle from moving forward even as the cops tried to push them away.

Rahul was arrested as the fourth accused in a case registered on December 20. He was charged with the destruction of public property, assaulting police officers, and obstructing their duty.

The secretariat march organized by the Youth Congress on December 20 to protest the attack on KSU and Youth Congress workers opposing the Nava Kerala program, escalated into a violent clash with the police.

The state capital resembled a combat zone, resulting in injuries to both policemen and Youth Congress members during the fight that ensued.

The second episode of violence unfolded at the DCC office, where police attempted to enter the party office after Youth Congress members purportedly released their colleagues from a police bus.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's decision to stifle the voices of youths has plunged the state into turmoil. These measures, employed by CM Vijayan, appear to be attempts to save his face from the people’s issues.

All the sectors have suffered significant declines, with the poor facing immense challenges in accessing welfare pensions and other essential schemes. With the Supplyco stores becoming empty, the stomachs of the common man too went empty.

The economic crisis has affected all sections of the population. There is a scarcity of medicine in hospitals.

The government has been trying to suppress and silence the people who question the actions of the government, sometimes jailing them. Many thousands are ready to go to jail following the lead of prominent figures like Rahul Gandhi.

"No matter how many people are jailed, the Congress will keep questioning the anti-people actions of the government and the Chief Minister", said Congress state General Secretary T U Radhakrishnan.
