New Delhi: India on Monday reported at least 6,915 new COVID-19 cases--14 per cent lower than yesterday's daily spike of over 8,000 cases. According to Union Health Ministry, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,29,24,130.

On Monday, the country had logged 8,013 cases in a single day jump. It was the first time since December last year that the single-day spike was below the 10,000-mark.

The death count climbed to 5,13,843 with 119 fresh fatalities, the data updated on Monday stated. Kerala added 46 deaths as backlog to the tally.

The daily COVID-19 cases have remained less than one lakh for 23 consecutive days.

The active cases, comprising 0.22 per cent of the total infections, dipped to 92,472, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has marginally improved to 98.59 per cent, the ministry said.

As the cases are falling steadily, the daily positivity rate is down to 0.77 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 1.11 per cent, according to the health ministry.

The cumulative number of people who have recuperated from the disease is at 4,23,24,550, the data showed.

The cumulative anti-Covid doses administered in the country so far exceeded 177.70 crore.

Meanwhile, a modeling study by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur has suggested that the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India may start around June 22 and peak from mid to late August.

The study used a statistical model to make the prediction. The finding shows that the next surge is to persist for approximately four months.

However, the severity will rely on the nature of the variant and the Covid vaccination status across India, the researchers said.
