Chengalpattu/Tamil Nadu: Sangeetha Vijay has approached the District Court in Chengalpattu seeking a legal end to her marriage with actor-politician C Joseph Vijay Chandrasekar. The petition has been filed under Sections 27(1)(a), (b), and (d), read with Sections 36 and 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, The Indian Express reported.

In the court filing, the 48-year-old petitioner has stated that the couple formally registered their marriage in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998. She further noted that a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony was later conducted on August 25, 1999, at Rajah Muthiah Mandram in Egmore, Chennai.

The plea recounts that the marriage functioned smoothly in its initial years, with the petitioner managing domestic affairs and focusing on raising their children. The situation allegedly changed in April 2021, when she claims to have discovered that her husband was involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress, an allegation she says caused her severe emotional distress.

According to the petition, although the respondent is said to have assured her that the relationship would be terminated, the association purportedly continued. She has alleged that this resulted in mental cruelty, emotional withdrawal, public embarrassment linked to social media activity, and constructive desertion.

The filing also records that reconciliation efforts were undertaken on two occasions — first between September 2021 and February 2022, and later between August 2024 and February 2025 — through counselling sessions and personal discussions, but these attempts did not yield a resolution.

Terming the marriage as having broken down beyond repair, the petitioner has requested a decree of divorce, permanent alimony proportionate to the respondent’s earnings and status, and the right to remain in the matrimonial residence in Neelankarai until the case is concluded or suitable alternative housing is arranged. She has additionally sought that the proceedings be conducted in camera to safeguard the privacy and dignity of all parties concerned.
