West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar said the worsening law and order situation in the state is concerning. His comments come after several protests in the Howrah district over controversial remarks that led to violence.

On Friday, protesters clashed with police personnel in Dhulagarh, Panchla, and Uluberia areas when law enforcers tried to end a blockade on a national highway stretch. Police vehicles were set on fire and public property was damaged. Commuters struggled as road and railway tracks were blocked. Several local and express trains were cancelled due to the clashes.

Local BJP office was also set on fire by protestors who called for action against former BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal.

He asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take strict action against those breaking the law. The Governor tweeted that the inaction of the Kolkata Police is an unfortunate endorsement of the criminality of law violators.

Officials said the Howrah district was peaceful on Saturday morning.

The state government has suspended internet across the district till June 13 and prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were imposed in several areas such as Uluberia, Domjur, and Panchla till June 15.

No restriction is being imposed on voice calls and SMS and on newspapers. Communication and dissemination of knowledge and information is not stopped in any way, said the state order.
