Shahjahanpur: A 25-year-old Muslim man named Shehbaz was shot dead in the Katra area of Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, while allegedly attempting to flee from police custody during his transfer to a local court.

The accused was facing charges related to the murder of 35-year-old Professor Alok Gupta and the assault on several family members during a robbery the previous day.

According to the police, Shehbaz had been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of Professor Gupta and the attack on his family during the violent robbery.

Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Meena stated that a delay occurred during Shehbaz's journey to court due to stray animals blocking the road near Batlaiya village.

It was during this delay that Shehbaz reportedly gained control of a police sub-inspector's service pistol in an attempt to escape.

Shehbaz allegedly jumped out of the vehicle and fled toward nearby fields while firing the weapon at pursuing officers. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Shehbaz sustained injuries and ultimately lost his life.

Before Shehbaz's arrest in the murder case, a group of unidentified individuals had forcefully entered the home of Professor Alok Gupta, a private college professor, on the previous morning.

During the attack, Professor Gupta was fatally stabbed, and several family members, including his father, brother, and wife, suffered serious injuries.

Some of the attackers managed to escape capture, but Shehbaz was apprehended by neighbours and handed over to local authorities.

An FIR (First Information Report) has been filed at the Katra police station, invoking sections 307 (pertaining to attempted murder), 120B (related to criminal conspiracy), and 397 (involving robbery or dacoity with an intent to cause death or grievous harm) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
