Jaipur: Union minister MP Gajendra Singh Shekhawat invoked Roman emperor Nero while cricising the state's congress government over the communal clashes broke out in Jodhpur on Monday night.

He took a dig at Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, saying Nero was fiddling when Rome was burning, according to IANS.

When the city was burning, Shekhawat alleged, Gehlot was busy accepting wishes on his birthday.

Meanwhile, the state's BJP leaders accused the Congress government of maintaining appeasement policy.

Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is MP for Jodhpur and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, hailing from Jodhpur, is representing Sardarpura Assembly constituency since 1998.

He shot a barrage of questions to the government: why an innocent girl was attacked, why people sitting in their shops were attacked and why a BJP leader was attacked.

He alleged delay in lodging FIRs in the case.

Meanwhile, writing to Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra, BJP state chief Satish Poonia demanded fair probe into the violence.

"Necessary guidelines should be issued to the state government so that peace can be established in the state and communal incidents do not recur in Rajasthan. Strict action should be taken against the chaotic elements involved in the above incidents," he said.

Poonia accused the Congress government of practicing appeasement politics, posing challenge to law and order in Rajasthan.

He alleged an Islamic flag was put in Jodhpur and the violence ensued afterwards was to spread anarchy in the state.

"Why such incidents take place only under the Congress government? He was quoted as asking.

Police arrested 97 people following the violence in Jodhpur on Monday night which prompted authorities to force curfew and suspend internet.
