New Delhi: United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President Philemon Yang is set to begin his official visit to India from February 4 to February 8, at the invitation of the Government of India. The visit aims to bolster bilateral relations and deepen multilateral cooperation on key global issues, including international peace, security, and the 'Pact for the Future.'
During his stay, Yang will visit New Delhi and Bengaluru, with Bengaluru often hailed as the Silicon Valley of India. His itinerary includes high-level meetings, notably a courtesy call on President Droupadi Murmu and discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
In addition to these diplomatic engagements, Yang will interact with the United Nations Country Team in India, led by UN Resident Coordinator Shombi Sharp. He will also visit a public health facility in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the importance of health initiatives in global cooperation.
While in Bengaluru, Yang is scheduled to tour prominent institutions such as the Infosys campus and the Indian Institute of Science, along with other key sites in both cities, reflecting India's growing influence in technology and scientific research.
This visit follows Yang’s official tour of Japan from January 31 to February 4, where he met with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Akihiko Tanaka. He also paid tribute to the victims of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, laying a wreath at the cenotaph in their honor.
Born in the Republic of Cameroon, Philemon Yang previously served as the country's Prime Minister. In June 2024, he was elected President of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, with his tenure running from September 2024 to September 2025.
Yang’s visit to India is expected to further strengthen India’s collaboration with the United Nations and reinforce collective efforts to address pressing global challenges.
