Two BSF personnel arrested for rape at the Indo-Bangladesh border
text_fieldsKolkata: Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were arrested on charges of rape at Indo-Bangladesh border areas in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district. The district court on Saturday remanded them to seven-day police custody.
A spokesperson for the Eastern Command office of BSF in Kolkata revealed the names of the accused - assistant sub-inspector S.P. Chero and constable Altaf Hossain. Both were suspended from the forces with immediate effect.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim is a 23-year-old woman who tried to cross the border in Bagda with her child. They chased and nabbed her. Instead of arresting and handing her over to the local police, they dragged her to a field and raped her.
Local MLA Biswajti Das said BSF personnel harassing commoners from border villages is common. He added that he receives frequent complaints about such incidents. "I will give a detailed report to our chief minister, Mamata Banerjee and on Sunday we will be organising a protest rally in the area," said the representative.
