On Thursday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced that its eight-coach trains would be limited to 200 passengers instead of 2,400, 50 percent less than their original capacity.

In order to combat the spread of the Covid virus, the Delhi government issued a 'Yellow Alert' to stop the Delhi Metro from operating at 50 percent of its seating capacity.

The average 8-coach train carries about 2,400 passengers, with approximately 50 seated and 250 standing per coach.

Currently, due to restrictions of 50% seating and no standing, each coach can accommodate approximately 25 passengers, the DMRC said in a media release, adding, "Therefore, an 8-coach train can accommodate approximately 200 passengers.".

Approximately 10% of a train's regular capacity is used.

Consequently, you should only travel if absolutely necessary. You should also allow extra time for travel by Metro, as entry is restricted in order to ensure compliance with guidelines, which is causing long lines at the stations," the memo noted.

Delhi Metro stations had been witnessing long queues before the move.
