Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday called for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to be conferred with India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.

The demand was made during a special session convened to pay tributes to the late leader. The resolution moved by the Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh and conveyed heartfelt condolences to his family.

Members from across party lines paid rich tributes to the former Prime Minister, recalling his close association with Telangana. The main opposition party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), fully supported the demand for the Bharat Ratna, with BRS leader K. T. Rama Rao asserting that Singh truly deserved the highest honour.

Additionally, the Chief Minister proposed the installation of a statue of the late leader in Hyderabad’s Financial District to honour his memory and recognise his significant contributions to Telangana. He suggested that the statue would provide an opportunity for people to pay tributes on Manmohan Singh's birth and death anniversaries, and inspire future generations.

Revanth Reddy described Singh’s passing as a great loss to the nation, emphasising that his invaluable services to the country would never be forgotten. He outlined Singh’s remarkable career, including his roles as an advisor to the Union Finance Ministry, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Finance Minister, and ultimately, as Prime Minister.

The Chief Minister highlighted Singh’s close connection with Telangana, particularly noting that he fulfilled the long-awaited dream of a separate Telangana state. Revanth Reddy recalled that it was in Mahabubnagar, during his tenure as Prime Minister, that Singh launched the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, ensuring 100 days of guaranteed employment each year. He also credited Singh for the introduction of Aadhaar, a social revolution that reshaped the country.

Under Singh's leadership, several significant legislations were enacted, including the Food Security Act, the Right to Information Act, the Forest Rights Act of 2006, and the Land Acquisition Law of 2013, which ensured fair compensation for displaced citizens. The Chief Minister also recalled Singh’s role in defending democracy during protests by MPs.

BRS leader K. T. Rama Rao reflected on Singh’s journey, noting that he was brought into the government by P. V. Narasimha Rao, the son of Telangana, who made him Finance Minister. Rao praised Singh as a great economist, recalling his 1991 Budget speech where he boldly declared that the world would soon hear about India. KTR described Singh as the epitome of simple living and high thinking, adding that his loyalty and commitment to Congress were rare in today’s politics.
