The Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail to standup comic Munawar Faruqui in a case accusing him of hurting religious sentiments.

A bench of Justices including Rohinton Fali Nariman and BR Gavai has also stayed the production warrant of Uttar Pradesh Police against Faruqui in a separate case.

Faruqui had filed a writ petition as well as a Special Leave to Appeal (SLP), and both were heard by a bench of Justices R F Nariman and B R Gavai.

Munawar Faruqui was denied bail thrice before. Recently, the Madhya Pradesh High Court had refused to grant him bail on January 28 remarking that "promoting harmony" is one of the constitutional duties.

Faruqui and four others were arrested on January 1 following a complaint by a BJP MLA's son accusing him of passing "indecent" remarks about Hindu deities and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a comedy show at a cafe in Indore.
