Sonam Wangchuk's wife goes to Supreme Court seeking activist’s release
text_fieldsNew Delhi: As the climate activist Sonam Wangchuk continues in detention, his wife Gitanjali J Angmo has approached the Supreme Court seeking his release, NDTV reported.
Wangchuk, arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) in Jodhpur, faces allegations among others of having been in contact with a Pakistani Intelligence Operative.
Refuting the allegations, Angmo accused the Ladakh police of having an ‘agenda’ adding ‘They don't want to implement the 6th Schedule under any circumstances and want to make someone a scapegoat’.
Angmo posted on X the copy of her letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Kavinder Gupta, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and also the Leh District Collector.
Describing Wangchuk as not a ‘threat to anyone, Angmo pointed to what she said a ‘full-scale witch hunt’ over the past month to destroy ‘spirit of the climate activist’.
Referring to her request to PM Modi and President Murmu she said ‘Am I not entitled to meet and speak with my husband on the phone and in person wherever he is detained?’
Her other questions to the authorities include whether she had no right to know the ground of her husband’s detention alongside espousing his legal rights, to know his condition and communication with him, adding ‘As a responsible citizen of India, are we not entitled to peaceful freedom of expression and movement?’.
Wangchuk was arrested following violence in Leh during protests, which claimed the lives of at least four people.
The protesters demanded to include the region in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
