New Delhi: Union Agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday shied away from commenting on his prospects of becoming the national president of the BJP.

Chouhan’s name has reportedly cropped up as the potential candidate just as the saffron party is struggling to find next leader for the top party post, The Wire reported.

Chouhan reportedly met with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday giving rise to speculations that he could be the candidate.

When asked about his comments, Chouhan reportedly said that he had neither thought about it ‘nor has anyone told me. I can’t even think of it.’

He said his priority is to look after Ministries of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development, adding ‘At this moment, agriculture is in every pore of my body and farmers are in my breath.I’m working towards increasing the agricultural production, boosting farmers’ income, developing rural areas and expanding the Lakhpati Didi programme.’

Expanding further on his duties, Chouhan said ‘I am doing this work like worship. Serving farmers is worship of God for me and I want to keep doing this worship’.

J.P. Nadda continues in the post even after his term ended in January 2023 as the saffron party is unable to conduct its presidential elections on time.

Formally elected as the national president in January 2020, Nadda has been given multiple extensions in the post since January 2023.

Nadda was appointed as the 'working president' after the BJP came to power in 2019.
