Coimbatore: The 13-year-old girl named Jaiba Fathima, who was a student at the Urdu Middle School of Udhagamandalam Municipality in The Nilgiris, died after consuming excessive iron and folic acid supplements as part of a bet with her friends on Thursday.

Reports suggest that Fathima consumed nearly 45 supplements, which led to liver failure. Along with Fathima, three other students from the same school also consumed the supplements on Monday as part of a playful bet.

Fathima was said to have consumed the maximum number of supplements among other them.

It has been reported that on Monday, Jaiba Fathima and five other students went to their headmaster's room at the Urdu Middle School of Udhagamandalam Municipality in the Nilgiris, where they discovered a box of supplements that were intended to be distributed as part of the Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS) initiative of the National Health Mission.

According to the district education officer, the students challenged each other to see who could consume the most supplements. Fathima reportedly consumed around 45 pills, while two boys with her took two or three tablets each, and the remaining three girls consumed at least 10 tablets each.

Following the incident on Monday, when some of the students fainted after consuming excessive iron and folic acid supplements, they were quickly taken to the Udhagamandalam Government Hospital.

Some of the students, who were found fainted after taking excessive iron tablets, were rushed to the Udhagamandalam Government Hospital and from there, they were referred to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

The CMCH management stated that Jaiba Fathima had suffered severe liver damage due to consuming a large number of supplements and needed an urgent liver transplant. Therefore, she was referred to the Stanley Medical College in Chennai. However, as her condition deteriorated during transit, she was taken to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College in Salem, where she was unfortunately declared dead.
