Sambhal: Deputy Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Kumar, who is posted as the Circle Officer in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, has stirred controversy after making remarks suggesting that those expressing grief over Iran should “go to Iran and fight themselves.”
According to local media reports, the Sambhal police had convened a peace committee meeting with members of the Muslim community to discuss arrangements for Alvida Jumma, the last Friday of Ramzan, and the upcoming Eid prayers.
During the meeting, Kumar warned that strict action would be taken against individuals mourning the reported death of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Siasat Daily reported.
Addressing the gathering, the officer reportedly criticised those publicly lamenting Iran’s situation, suggesting that if they were so concerned, they should travel to Iran themselves. He further cautioned that if the conflict abroad had any impact on India, authorities would respond with strong measures.
Kumar also stated that offering prayers outside mosques would not be allowed under any circumstances. He warned that even a single person performing namaz outside a mosque would invite strict action from the police.
In addition, he cautioned people against creating social media reels related to the issue, suggesting that those attempting such acts would face firm police action.
The remarks have raised concerns among observers, who say such statements reflect a growing normalisation of Islamophobic rhetoric within sections of official institutions, where Muslim communities are often subjected to heightened scrutiny during Islamic religious observances.
Kuldeep Kumar did not respond to calls from Siasat.com seeking his reaction, while the Senior Superintendent of Police in Sambhal was also unavailable for comment.
