Rahul Gandhi’s popularity soars as Modi remains top choice for PM: survey
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Despite the BJP took a severe drubbing in Karnataka, nearly 40 percent surveyed across the nation said that they would vote for the saffron party if polls were held today.
The special NDTV survey in partnership with Lokniti-Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) confirms that Narendra Modi is the most popular choice for Prime Minister in 2024 polls.
However, Rahul Gandhi has risen to be a major challenger of the PM Modi with his numbers soaring following his cross country march and Karnataka polls.
The survey, held across 19 states between May 10 and 19 after Karnataka polls, shows the PM Modi is still holding 43 percent after nine years in office, nevertheless being blotched by a dip from previous 44 percent in popularity.
The BJP’s failure in Assembly polls all the same, the general mood in the state is largely in favour of PM Modi, with his popularity remaining strong.
About 43 percent respondents want BJP’s National Democratic Alliance back in power for the third time, while 38 percent disagreed.
Where 29 per cent polled said they would vote for the Congress if polls were held today, nearly a 40 per cent said they would do so for the BJP.
In Karnataka, the BJP’s vote share has gone up from 37 per cent( 2019) to 39 percent ( 2023).
Though Modi is the top choice, Rahul Gandhi has become his nearest rival with 27 per cent surveyed favouring him as Prime Minister.
Other major contenders for the post are far below in the list with Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal at 4 percent, followed by Akhilesh Yadav (3%), and Nitish Kumar (1%).
