text_fieldsThe Aam Aadmi Party is making moves to keep the promise made ahead of the Punjab Assembly polls. The party promised to provide free electricity for all households in the state, and From July 1st, 300 units of free power will be given to all.
AAP-Punjab is led by CM Bhagwant Mann and won 92 out of 117 seats in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. The party did not have an alliance in the election but won with a large majority.
The promise of 300 units of free electricity was made by AAP founder and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in June 2021. A few months later, he also announced that the party will build Mohalla clinics in the state to provide free healthcare. He had also promised Rs 1000 to all women above 18 years of age upon AAP winning in Punjab. The party has already delivered on another major election promise - a doorstep ration delivery scheme - last month.
Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government is completing one month of governance today. The Chief Minister had said in a press conference on Thursday that the party will give great good news to the people of Punjab on the 16th. He along with Chief Secretary Anirudh Tewari and Power Secretary Dilip Kumar had met with Kejriwal on Tuesday to discuss the free electricity scheme.
Punjab is already providing free power to the agriculture sector. A 2016 scheme has introduced 200 free units of electricity to the Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes, and BPL families. Kejriwal's election promise was to provide free electricity to every household with no discrimination. The state already has a debt of Rs 3 lakh crore. The new scheme will add Rs 5,000 crore annually to it.
