Prohibitory orders issued in Manipur’s Churachandpur amid fresh violence
text_fieldsImphal: Following fresh violence in Churachandpur district of Manipur, the government on Tuesday issued prohibitory orders for two months.
The prohibitory orders under CrPC Section 144 follow a tribal body's declaration to undertake on Tuesday the mass burial of the tribal people who died in the ethnic clashes, according India Today.
The orders under CrPC Section 144 has been imposed from December 18 Feb 18, 2024.
‘It appears upon careful consideration that there is still serious apprehension of breach of law and order in the areas, detrimental to the peace and public tranquility’, the order of District Magistrate, Churachandpur reportedly stated.
The influential tribal body ‘The Indigenous Tribal Leader's Forum (ITFL)’ based in Churachandpur announced the burial of 60 people killed in clashes.
The bodies that were kept in government mortuaries since early May have been handed over to their families on Thursday.
The ethnic violence that erupted when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was taken out on May 3 claimed more than 150 lives, injuring over 3,000.
The march was conducted to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
As the violence engulfed the state’s tribal settlements displacing numerous people, the Centre deployed nearly 40,000 security personal to control the situation.
A committee constituted by the Supreme Court in August said that only 81 bodies had been claimed out of the total deaths.
The Court in November asked the Manipur government to facilitate the burial or cremation of the bodies identified and unclaimed by December.
