Police picks up Umer Khalid's mother and sister; release later

New Delhi: The Delhi police has picked up Dr. Umer Khalid's mother and sister who were learnt to be taking parting in a commemoration programme of police violence in Jamia Millia Islamia. They were released later.

The police has also took several others into custody who were taking part in a candle light march. All of them were released later, according to reports.

The police had not revealed the location of the detained persons so far, according to the activists who have reached the Lajpat Nagar Police Station after the incident.

Mobile phones of both the detained were switched off. According to the activists, the two women were taken by police after disbursing a crowd gathered at Batla House to commemorate anniversary of the police's violence at Jamia Millia Islamia.

Students and residents were holding a candle march at Nafees Road in Batla House, in solidarity with the victims of the police violence in the university last year.

Journalist Arif Shah tweeted a video which purportedly shows a battalion of police men manhandling several youth while ushering them to police vehicles.

Umer Khalid, a former JNU student, is in Tihar Jail after he was arrested on the intervening night of September 13/14 in a case registered by Delhi Police alleging criminal conspiracy behind the Delhi riots. The police alleged that Khalid was the master-brain behind the anti-CAA protests.
