PM Modi surpasses Nehru to become longest-serving elected PM
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday adopted a resolution congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister to hold office continuously.
Cabinet members honoured the Prime Minister's achievement with a standing ovation, marking the historic milestone.
Prime Minister Modi completed 4,399 days in office on Wednesday, surpassing the tenure of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, as the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in continuous service. Modi has led the country since first assuming office in 2014 and subsequently secured consecutive mandates in 2019 and 2024.
For the comparison, Nehru's tenure is counted from 1952 onwards, following India's first general elections. Although he served as Prime Minister from 1947, he headed an interim government until 1952.
While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi spent more than 14 years in office, her tenure was not continuous, making Modi the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in India's history.
The Modi government's tenure has been marked by several major infrastructure and nation-building initiatives, including the new Parliament building, the Central Vista redevelopment project, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), and the Ganga Expressway.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is set to hold a key meeting at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital on Wednesday to celebrate the completion of 12 years of the NDA government at the Centre and to mark Prime Minister Modi's record-breaking tenure.
The meeting is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Modi, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from all 22 NDA-ruled states and Union Territories, along with leaders of the alliance's constituent parties.
According to sources, the NDA is also likely to adopt a resolution congratulating Modi on surpassing the record previously held by Nehru.
Senior Union ministers, including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, are expected to participate in the event, alongside other prominent NDA leaders.
The gathering is being organised to commemorate the NDA government's 12th year in office and is expected to focus on the alliance's achievements, future policy priorities and political roadmap. Discussions are likely to centre on governance initiatives, development programmes and preparations for upcoming electoral challenges.
