PM Modi passes G20 Presidency to Brazil; announces summit closure

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the closure of the New Delhi G20 leaders' Summit and handed over the presidency gavel to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, to mark the transfer of the presidency at the third G20 session "One Future" at the Bharat Mandapam at New Delhi's Pragati Maidan.
PM Modi expressed hope that under Brazil's presidency, the G20 will take forward the common agenda of the grouping further ahead. He also congratulated the Brazilian president on the occasion.
“I want to congratulate Brazil's president and my friend Lula da Silva, and hand over the presidency's gavel to him,” Modi said.
Brazil will officially hold the G20 presidency for the next one year.
Lula da Silva congratulated Modi and thanked India for its efforts to address the topics of interest to emerging economies.
While delivering his speech to announce the closure of the G20 Summit, PM Modi said, "As you all know India has the responsibility of G20 presidency till November 2023. In these two days, all of you gave a lot of suggestions and placed proposals. It is our duty that the suggestions we have received be reviewed once again so as to see how their progress can be sped up. I propose that at the end of November, we hold a virtual session of G20."

He added, "We can review the topics decided in this Summit in that virtual session. I hope you all will connect in the virtual session. With this, I declare the conclusion of G20 Summit".
India had taken over the G20 presidency from Indonesia during the Bali Summit last year.
With this, the two-day mega conclave of world leaders in the national capital under India's G20 presidency comes to an end. However, PM Modi will be holding several meetings with leaders of France, Canada and Nigeria among others today.
Day two of the summit began with G20 leaders including US President Biden, UK PM Rishi Sunak and Canada's Justin Trudeau gathering at Rajghat to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.
The leaders, along with PM Modi, laid ceremonial wreaths at the Gandhi Memorial and held a tree plantation ceremony at Bharat Mandapam.
On the occasion, Modi proposed to hold a virtual session of G20 at the end of November.

"In the last two days, you have put forward your views, given suggestions and a number of proposals have been put forward. It is our responsibility that the suggestions that have come forth are closely looked upon as to how they can be speeded up," Modi said.
"It is my proposal that we hold another session of the G20 virtually in November- end. In that session, we can review the issues that have been agreed upon during this summit. Our teams will share the details of it with all of view. I hope all of you will join this (session)," he said.
"With this, I declare the G20 summit as closed," Modi said.
Enhancing financial inclusion and strengthening digital public Infrastructure as well as expanding multilateral development banks (MDBs) for emerging economies, amplifying the voice of the Global South and ensuring environment sustainability have been some of the key takeaways of India's G20 presidency.
