text_fieldsPrime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the crucial role of peace and tranquillity in border regions for fostering healthy bilateral relations with China.
In an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal ahead of his visit to the United States, PM Modi reaffirmed India's unwavering commitment to respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, underscoring the nation's preparedness to safeguard its own dignity.
Addressing the ongoing Ukraine conflict, the Prime Minister expressed India's unequivocal support for peaceful resolutions, stating, "Disputes should be resolved with diplomacy and dialogue, not war." PM Modi dispelled any misconceptions about India's neutrality, asserting, "We are on the side of peace." Upholding the principles of international law and the sanctity of national sovereignty, he remarked, "All countries should respect international law and the sovereignty of countries."
Responding to concerns regarding India's position on Russia amidst its conflict with Ukraine, PM Modi dismissed the notion that such perceptions were widespread in the United States. He affirmed that India's stance was well-known and well-understood globally, asserting, "The world has full confidence that India's topmost priority is peace."
PM Modi also shed light on the India-China relationship, emphasising the paramount importance of peace and tranquillity in border areas for fostering normal bilateral ties. "We have a core belief in respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, observing the rule of law, and peaceful resolution of differences and disputes." Simultaneously, he reiterated India's complete preparedness and unwavering commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and dignity.
The Indian and Chinese armed forces have been engaged in a standoff for over three years at friction points in eastern Ladakh. However, following extensive diplomatic and military discussions, disengagement has been achieved in several areas. The border confrontation in eastern Ladakh first started in May 2020, subsequent to a violent clash in the Pangong Lake region.
India has consistently maintained that achieving peace in the border areas is a prerequisite for normalising relations with China. By emphasising the principles of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, upholding the rule of law, and seeking peaceful resolutions, India aims to establish a foundation of mutual understanding and cooperation with its neighbouring nation.
