Dehradun: Major rivers in Uttarakhand are overflowing in the heavy rains pouring down over the last few days, leaving more than hundred roads blocked causing the government to issue warnings.

The Meteorological Department predicted more heavy rains in several districts including Champawat, Almora, Pithoragarh, Udhamsingh Nagar, alongside issuing orange alert for Dehradun, Pauri, Tehri, and Haridwar.

More than 100 roads in the state remain closed for traffic after rise in water levels of Ganga, Alaknanda, Bhagirathi, Sarada, Mandakini and Kosi rivers.

Rain measurement in the last 24 hours showed 72.5 mm fall in Chaukhutia of Almora, 62 mm in Bhansiachana, 59 mm in Lohaghat, 45 mm in Champawat, 42 mm in Kashipur, 38 mm in Bhimtal, 31 mm in Haldwani, and 26 mm in Chamoli, according to NDTV.

The swollen waters of Alaknanda River in Rudraprayag district submerged a 10-foot idol of Lord Shiva.

Authorities have asked people to avoid low-lying areas or river banks alongside directing to close all non-government schools in Pauri and Nainital districts.

The disaster management departments and the national disaster rescue force are asked to remain alert.

Landslide led to blocking roads to Pagal Nal and Malwa near Peepal Kothi on the Badrinath National Highway, according to the report.

Other roads to remain blocked include those on Yamunotri Highway, Dharchula and Tawa Ghat National Highway.
