Opposition intensifies call for removal of TN Guv over secularism remark
text_fieldsThe Opposition in Tamil Nadu has called for the dismissal of Governor R.N. Ravi following his controversial remarks that labelled secularism as a concept stemming from Europe, asserting that India does not require it.
These statements were made during an event in Kanyakumari, where Ravi claimed that many misconceptions had been imposed upon Indians, specifically citing the misinterpretation of secularism.
Ravi elaborated on his perspective by suggesting that secularism emerged in Europe due to historical conflicts between church and state, questioning how such a concept could be relevant to India, which he believes should adhere to its own cultural and religious principles.
He further stated that secularism was not an original part of India’s Constitution but was instead added during the Emergency period, referring to the leadership of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The comments sparked outrage from various political figures, particularly from the Congress party. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh characterised Ravi's remarks as a reflection of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agenda, asserting that the governor’s previous statements have similarly been unacceptable.
Ramesh emphasised that Ravi, despite holding a constitutional office, has displayed a lack of respect for the Constitution, urging for his immediate removal from the governorship.
Ravi's comments were also met with criticism from the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, with spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan arguing that secularism is vital for India, in stark contrast to Ravi's views. Elangovan noted that Article 25 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, suggesting that the governor’s apparent unfamiliarity with constitutional principles disqualifies him from his position.
Brinda Karat, a leader from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), expressed concern over Ravi's disregard for the Constitution, suggesting that his statements imply that he views it as a foreign imposition. She pointed out that the appointments made by the ruling BJP often favour individuals who do not uphold constitutional values.
Manickam Tagore, a Congress MP from Virudhunagar, reiterated that while the concept of secularism may vary internationally, India embodies a respect for all religions and traditions. He warned that the BJP and its affiliated organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, aim to alter the Constitution to fit their narrative, but the Opposition is resolute in preventing such changes.
