Bhubaneswar: A state government employee in Odisha's Bhubaneswar threw out the window of his apartment bundles of Rs 500 notes when vigilance officials arrived for a raid.

Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, a Chief Engineer with State's Rural Development Department, appeared to be cornered when the officials showed up, forcing him to dispose of the currency.

It is reported that over Rs 2 crore in cash was recovered from him in a case of alleged corruption and disproportionate assets.

Simultaneous raids at seven locations in Angul, Bhubaneswar and Pipili (Puri) in Odisha led to discovering around Rs 2.1 crore in cash.

Vigilance officials recovered the money that Sarangi disposed later in the presence of witness.

It is revealed that officials recovered Rs 1.1 crore from his residence at Angul and another Rs 1 crore from Bhubaneswar flat.

Sarangi came under the scanner of officials following allegations that he possessed assets disproportionate to his known source of income.

A team of 26 police officers including eight Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSPs), 12 inspectors and six assistant sub-inspector (ASIs) carried out the raids.

The videos from the raids showed officials counting recovered money mostly Rs 500 notes alongside some Rs 200, Rs 100 and Rs 50 notes.

It is reported that the counting of the cash is still underway.
