The Election Commission has said that there is no connection between the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). "No evidence has been found linking the two organizations so far."

On September 28, the central government banned PFI and its affiliates for five years, citing security threats and links to terrorism. A total of nine organizations have been declared 'unlawful' under the UAPA. Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said that SDPI has submitted all the required documents and so far there is no evidence of any link between PFI and SDPI, reported India Today.

"We are aware of the action against PFI. SDPI has submitted all the required documents. No link has yet been established between PFI and SDPI. There has been no failure on their part," said the poll body chief.

SDPI was formed on June 21, 2009. It was registered with the Election Commission of India on 13 April 2010. So far, SDPI members have been elected in Municipal Corporations and Gram Panchayats in the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh.
