New Delhi: Nitin Nabin on Tuesday formally assumed office as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, succeeding J.P. Nadda and marking a new phase for the party as it aims to consolidate its political influence across the country.

The organisational election results were declared by K. Laxman, Returning Officer for the BJP polls, who handed over the certificate of election to 45-year-old Nabin, the youngest leader ever to hold the top post. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, outgoing president Nadda, and senior leaders including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Nitin Gadkari were present at the BJP headquarters to witness the leadership transition.

Nabin became the 12th president of the BJP, which was founded in 1980—the same year he was born. Known for his low-profile and unassuming style, Nabin resigned from his ministerial roles in Bihar, including law and justice, urban development, and housing, after his appointment as working president on December 14.

“This election shows that in the BJP, leadership rises from hard work and dedication, not from dynastic privilege,” Laxman said while announcing the results.

J.P. Nadda congratulated the new leader, saying, “Today is a very historic occasion, as our young, energetic, and talented Nitin Nabin takes charge as National President of the world’s largest political party. I extend my heartfelt congratulations on behalf of myself and crores of party workers.”

Nabin has also been provided top-tier armed security by the Central government. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will provide a Z-category security detail to accompany him on travels across the country, following instructions from the Union Home Ministry issued after his election.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Nabin and described him as a “millennial” leader with youthful energy and extensive organisational experience, which would greatly benefit the party. Speaking at the BJP headquarters, Modi said, “Every word of his guidance will chart our future course of action. I, too, as a party worker, have presented an account of my work to the new president and look forward to his guidance.”

The gathering was attended by senior leaders, Union ministers, chief ministers of BJP-ruled states, and scores of party workers, underlining the significance of the leadership transition.
