Aizawl: The group of refugees from Myanmar that fled to Mizoram when the military junta seized power in February 2021 is stirring trouble in the region. The state government is concerned with the number of refugees and their activities.

So far, 30,401 Myanmar nationals have taken shelter in the northeastern state. They are trying to purchase land and conduct small businesses like opening shops. Mizoram government has issued a strict order preventing refugees from such actions. All refugees are also forbidden from applying to get an Aadhaar card, voter identity card, or driving licence. The government has provided them with a temporary identity card.

Mizoram police said refugees are smuggling highly addictive drugs, arms, ammunition, exotic animals, dried areca nuts, foreign cigarettes, and tobacco products among other contraband.

Indian nationals are also assisting them in conducting business. Refugees have been using boats via the Tiau river to transport their belongings, rations, and even livestock.

Assam Rifles troopers on September 21 seized large quantities of arms, war-like items, air guns, air gun pellets, combat uniforms, radio sets, tactical vests, tactical gloves, and boots. Seven people including five refugees were arrested from Mizoram's Siaha district.

As per official records, 11,798 children and 10,047 women are sheltered in Mizoram's 157 camps. Community centres, government buildings, rented houses, relatives' houses, and shelters set up by NGOs are also providing homes for refugees. 14 Myanmakers are also among the refugees.

The state government, NGOs, churches, and village authorities are providing Myanmarese with food, medicines, and relief materials. Myanmar nationals who came to Mizoram amid the coup are mostly from Chin communities who share ethnicity and ancestry with the Mizos.
