Mumbai landslide kills two as heavy rain paralyzes city
text_fieldsMumbai: Two people lost their lives and two others were injured after torrential rainfall in Mumbai triggered a landslide in the city’s Vikhroli area on Saturday. Flight and train operations were disrupted, and widespread traffic problems were reported due to waterlogging.
The incident occurred around 2:39 a.m. at Varsha Nagar in Vikhroli Parksite, when a portion of soil and stones from a nearby hillock collapsed onto a hut. Four members of the Mishra family were trapped under the debris and were immediately rushed to Rajawadi Hospital.
Doctors confirmed the deaths of Shalu Mishra (19) and Suresh Mishra (50), while Aarti Mishra (45) and Ruturaj Mishra (20) are receiving treatment and are currently stable, according to hospital authorities.
Emergency response teams, including the fire brigade, police, and BMC staff, quickly reached the site and began evacuations. Nearby residents were shifted to safer locations as a precautionary measure.
Mumbai continued to face severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions following continuous heavy rainfall. Major arterial roads were flooded, vehicles were stranded on the Western Express Highway, and the Andheri subway was closed due to water accumulation. Areas including Kurla, Sion, Chembur, and Andheri reported significant waterlogging.
Railway tracks were also affected, causing delays in local train services, which were running 15-20 minutes late. Passengers were advised to plan their travel accordingly.
Flight operations at Mumbai airport were impacted, with several airlines, including IndiGo, issuing advisories urging passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
Mumbai Police issued a warning about potential waterlogging across key areas and advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel. “Mumbai is experiencing heavy rainfall with an Orange Alert in effect. Waterlogging and reduced visibility have been reported in several areas. Mumbaikars are advised to avoid non-essential travel and to exercise caution while venturing out. Police have been instructed to be on high alert and are ready to assist citizens. In case of emergency, dial 100 / 112 / 103,” the police said in a statement.
