MP teacher forced to do sit-ups as apology for advising students against wearing tilak
text_fieldsIn Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone district, a Muslim guest teacher, Shahrukh Pathan, faced public humiliation after advising his Class 2 students not to wear tilak on their foreheads or the kalawa thread on their wrists during class.
School staff clarified that Pathan’s intention was not to offend any religion but to promote equality and harmony among students of different faiths. A fellow teacher explained that his advice was meant to help children respect all communities and avoid divisions.
Reports said that some Hindu students’ parents were angered by the advice and, along with members of the Hindutva organisation Sakal Hindu Samaj, gathered at the school shouting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans, Siasat Daily reported.
They allegedly forced Pathan to do sit-ups in front of everyone as punishment. One member of the group accused the teacher of insulting religious sentiments and attempting to alienate children from their traditions.
The incident was recorded on video and widely shared on social media, sparking outrage. The event has drawn widespread criticism online, with many users condemning the humiliation of the teacher.
Supporters of Pathan argued that his actions aimed to foster unity rather than target any belief. An education rights activist also remarked that teachers should be allowed to perform their duties without fear, adding that forcing a teacher to apologise publicly in such a degrading manner sets a poor example for students.
