Varanasi: A team of officials, including lawyers appointed by a court, held an inspection at a mosque next to Varanasi's Kashi Vishwanath temple to find a way to give access to a Hindu shrine behind it for Hindu devotees.

The inspection began yesterday and is likely to continue today as well. A local court has appointed a team to conduct survey and videography at Gyanvapi Mosque after five women urged that the devotees be allowed to unrestricted, yearlong access to Maa Shringar Gauri site, which is located at the back mosque's western wall.

At present, the shrine is opened every year for rituals and prayers.

When the team started their inspection after the Friday prayer, there was heavy force outside the Mosque. The plea also wanted the court permission to pray to other "visible and invisible deities within the old temple complex".

The court wanted the team to submit a report by May 10 after conducting inspection and videography at the site.
